Concert to aid the orphans

THE Cambodian Orphanage Fund is holding a national concert tour featuring some of Cambodia’s most well known singers to raise funds to provide educational scholarships to orphans in Cambodia.

The concert will be held as part of the upcoming launch of the Cambodian Orphanage Fund in conjunction with Cambodian New Year 2007 celebrations.

The Sydney event will be held at the Monte Carlo Reception, Fairfield on Saturday, April 8, at 6.30pm.

Singers include Suos Sangveacha, Chhuon Sovannchhai, Chhay Kosol and Chhuon Srey Mao.

Suspects in Cambodia’s biggest drug bust appear in court

Phnom Penh – One Chinese woman appeared in a Phnom Penh court and 17 other defendants were arraigned in a provincial court over the seizure of tons of chemicals allegedly procured to manufacture methamphetamines, officials said Tuesday.

Cambodian police said they confiscated more than three tons of chemicals used to produce the drugs in separate raids in the capital and on a remote farm in Kampong Speu province, nearly 100 kilometres southwest of the capital, last Sunday.

CHIFENG, China, March 28 Bao Xishun, the world’s tallest man at 7 feet 9 inches, ended his worldwide search for a wife by marrying a woman from his Chinese hometown.

The Daily Mail reported that the 56-year-old, who had engaged in a tireless search for love that spanned the globe, was married last week to a 29-year-old woman who was also born in the Chinese city of Chifeng.

AdvertisementSMS text messaging has been banned in Cambodia over the weekend amid fears of political unrest as the country votes for local government administrators, election officials said Friday.

The announcement came on the final day of campaigning before the Sunday polls, as thousands of ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) supporters rallied in the capital Phnom Penh, snarling traffic for hours.

On March 28, 2007, around 120 participants attended Blog Training in Kompong Cham province, being conducted by Open Forum of Cambodia (OFC) under funding from EED by cooperation with Community Information Center (CIC center).

CIC manager, Vannareth, said that there were big numbers of people interesting in this training. Those are university and high school students, NGO staff, private staff, monks, provincial official registered at her center every day. She added that she announced Blog training at university building, provincial department and companies and in public since March 11.

Singer’s condition improving, crime at large

So far, crimes remain at large and are not identified clearly following shooting twice at popular singer last month in the early morning in capital, while she was parking her car and walking toward his English class. Now her health condition is improving.

Pov Panhapich, 23, popular singer and television host, was shot on February 23, 2007 in the heart of Phnom Penh two bullets at close range in the neck and hip. The gunmen, aged mid 20s, shot her from the back of a motorcycle from a distance of around one meter while she had parked her car and was walking to the ELT School near Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy along Norodom Boulevard.

Cairo confirms new bird flu cases

Cairo – Health ministry officials have announced that three children have contracted the potentially deadly strain of bird flu, bringing the total number of Egyptians to be diagnosed with the disease to more than 30 since it appeared in the country in 2006, the state-run news agency said.

The first case was identified as four-year-old Ibrahim Mahmoud Helmi of the southern Qena province, the Middle East News Agency, or MENA, reported on Saturday. Another four-year-old Egyptian girl, identified as Mariam Issa Idris of the Qalyoubiya province north of Cairo, who also tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu strain on Saturday.
